If your dryer is overheating, you need to take care of the problem as soon as possible. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), it is estimated that in 1998, clothes dryers were associated with 15,600 fires, which resulted in 20 deaths and 370 injuries. Fires can occur when lint builds up in the dryer or in the exhaust duct. Lint can block the flow of air, cause excessive heat build-up, and result in a fire in some dryers. CPSC formulated some simple prevention recommendations.

Dryer overheating is usually associated with defective cycling thermostat or clogged vent system. The solution to this problem can be as easy as cleaning the lint or something technical as diagnosing and replacing a faulty component. We think that if you follow the steps given below, you will be able to resolve the problem with no to little money.

  1. 1Repair your dryer free: Find if you have warranty for your dryer. If you bought your dryer within one year, it is most likely that you have warranty. Most appliance manufacturers provide one year free warranty. If you have warranty, call the company and get your dryer fixed. If you do not have warranty and do not want to spend too much money, you will have to spend some time to identify and possibly fix the problem. The steps below will guide you through the process of identifying and fixing the problem.
  2. 2Check and clean vents: Check the vent for clog or blockage. If you find that the vent is clogged or blocked, clean it thoroughly. Also, check if the vent is kinked at any area of the vent line. If there are any kinks, you must straighten the vent to remove kinks. The best option is to replace the vent entirely.
  3. 3Clean lint: Clean the lint trap. Also, clean the trap housing using a dryer brush. Be careful so that you do not damage any part of the trap housing. It is a good idea to clean the link trap using hot water. Also check the exhaust that comes out of the house. After you have cleaned the vent and the lint, run the dryer in normal mode and check if the dryer is still overheating. If the dryer is not overheating, you are done. Otherwise move to the next step.
  4. 4 Air Exhaust: When the dryer is running, check if the discharge from the exhaust is good or not. The exhaust is outside your house. The end of the dryer vent that you see at the wall immediately close to your dryer is the air exhaust point. If you get a feeling that the discharge from the exhaust is not strong enough, the blower inside the dryer may be defective. Call a qualified appliance repair person to check and replace the blower fan.
  5. 5 Cycling Thermostat: Check cycling thermostats: You need to know how to test cycling thermostat to identify if the cycling thermostat is the cause of the overheating problem. Check cycling thermostat and replace it if you find it is faulty. Call a qualified appliance repair technician if you do not have the skill to test the cycling thermostat and other possible parts in your dryer and replace the faulty part.
